A trial balance is a report that shows the balances of all the accounts in your general ledger at a specific point in time. It is used to check for errors and prepare financial statements. To check your trial balance, you need to follow these steps:

• List all the accounts in your general ledger along with their debit or credit balances in a worksheet. The accounts should be arranged in the order of assets, liabilities, and equity.
• Add up the  amounts in the debit column and the credit column. The totals should be  equal if there are no errors in your accounting records. If the totals are not equal, you need to find and correct the errors.
• Some common types of errors that may cause a trial balance to be out of balance are:
  • Entries have  been made twice or omitted.
  • Entries have been made to the wrong account or with the wrong amount
  • A mistake in transferring the balances from the ledger accounts to the trial balance
  • A  transposition error, which occurs when two digits are reversed (e.g., 54 instead of 45)
  • A slide error, which occurs when a decimal point is misplaced (e.g., 5.40 instead of  54.00)
• To locate these errors, you can use some techniques such as:
  • Rechecking the arithmetic of the trial balance and the ledger accounts
  • Comparing the journal entries with the ledger accounts and the trial balance
